Add Markups on Plans

Modified on Thu, 20 Nov at 6:46 AM

The Plans module enables users to visually annotate plan drawings—adding personal markups, photos, and notes to highlight tasks, issues, or specific locations in the construction workflow. These markup tools are also available when a plan sheet is attached to items such as RFIs, Submittals, Change Orders, and Punchlist items.

  • Markups created in the Plans module are private by default and visible only to the creator.
  • You can share your markups with other team members or stakeholders as needed.
  • Access levels can be applied to restrict visibility to selected audiences.
  • Markups added while attaching a plan sheet to an RFI, Submittal, Change Order, or Punchlist item are visible to all users who have access to that document.
  • You can view all markups together or selectively display only the ones you need. For detailed steps, refer to View Markups.

To add a markup

  • Ensure that you've opened the required plan sheet. If you haven't done so:
    • Open the management console for the project
    • Click the app launcher icon in the top-right, then select 'Documents.'
    • Click' Plans' at the top and choose 'Plan Sheets' on the left.
    • Click on the plan sheet thumbnail to open it

The latest version of the drawing is shown by default. If the plan drawing has any markups made earlier, it opens with the latest markup you created or shared with you.

  • Click at the top right to create an annotation.

Linarc automatically calibrates the ruler tool based on the scale given in the plan sheet, allowing you to add accurate measurements to your markups. If the system is unable to detect the scale, you can manually calibrate the ruler. See Add Length Measurements for more guidance.

The toolbar on the right lets you create different types of markup elements on the drawing:

-Attach a photo/image to a plan sheet. See Attach photos to markups for more guidance.
-Pinpoint a location on the plan sheet. See Add a Location markup for more guidance
-Create length markups. The ruler tool provides the capability to measure any unknown distance between two points. Use this tool to calibrate the ruler manually. See Add Length Measurements for more guidance.
-Mark an area with a polygonal shape as required. This is useful to encircle an area with an irregular shape. You can select the color, drag, reshape, and position the item as per your needs.  See Create Polygonal markups for more guidance.
-Draw free-form/freehand shapes as markups. You can choose the line thickness and color for your markups. See Create a free-form/freehand markup for more guidance.
-Highlight specific portions of text or drawings. See Highlight areas, dimensions, and notes for more guidance.
-Add a text markup. You can choose color and font size, and enter your notes and comments to suit your needs. See Insert Text Notes for more guidance.
-Spotlight an area on the plan sheet with the cloud shape tool. You can select the color, resize, background fill, etc., as per your needs.  See Add a cloud markup for more guidance.
-Add a line or an arrow to point to a specific spot or item in the drawing. You can resize, rotate, and position the line/arrow on any portion of the drawing. See Add Lines and Arrows for more guidance.
-Area markup with box, circle/ellipse, and triangle shapes. Encircle an area or a spot on the drawing to highlight it. You can select the color, resize, rotate, drag, and position the item as per your needs. See Mark areas for more guidance.
-Attach location identifier icons to a plan sheet. See Mark Location Identifiers for more details.
-Fill tool - Choose the color and transparency for the background fill when making markings like a square, circle, cloud, etc. See Setup stroke width and color for more guidance.
-Select the color and stroke width for your markup. Applies to all tools except the image markup tool. Also serves as the font size tool for the text tool. You can set the stroke width and color for the markups and set the font size for any text markup. See Setup stroke width and color for more guidance.

Each markup element you add is created as a layer over the plan sheet. Once you publish a markup, the layers are grouped and saved with a markup name you specify.

  • The layer editor on the left lets you view all element layers you include in the markup with an expandable, collapsible tree structure for organized viewing. You can rename the layers shortly, describing them.
    • Click the layer button on the left to open the layer editor

  • Click the element label in the Layer Editor to instantly highlight the markup on the plan sheet, along with its associated measurements
  • Click on the element label to a new label if necessary to keep your layers organized
  • Use the eyeicon to show or hide the layer
  • Click the trashcanicon to remove an element added by mistake
  • Once you are done with the markup elements, click the icon on the top right to save the layer group as a markup. See Publish Markups for more details
