    Custom WBS code settings

      Article Summary

This article explains creating a master schedule from scratch directly on the Linarc scheduler with custom WBS codes for the schedule items.

      • Open the project management console for the project.
      • Click 'Schedule' on the top.

If you are accessing the 'Scheduler' for the first time, you can choose between the Standard WBS Code and Custom WBS Code:

      • Choose 'Custom' in the 'WBS Settings' dialog, then click 'Proceed.'

      The 'WBS Setup' screen appears:

      • Click on the top-level box and enter a three-letter prefix code for assignment to the top-level WBS element and the project name.
      • Click on 'Add Items' and choose the number of elements in that level, for example, the phases in the project.

The items for the next level are added:

      • Click on each box and enter the three-letter prefix for WBS code to assign to that element and its task name.
      • Click on 'Add Items' under the first box and select the number of items that fall under that phase, for example, the number of deliverables in that phase.

The 'WBS Code Preview' at the bottom shows the code assigned to the selected element.

      • Repeat the processes of adding WBS codes and adding children for each item.
        • To insert an additional item to a level, right-click on the previous item and choose  '+ Add' from the options.
        • Right-click on an item and choose  'Delete' from the options to remove it from a level.

      • Repeat the process to add more levels.
      • Once you are done up to the planned levels, click 'Back to Schedule' at the top right.

The WBS tree structure is auto-imported into your schedule.

The elements are assigned with WBS codes as specified in the chart

      • Edit task names and other values as applicable to each item.
      • For the lowest level items, for example, the lowest level deliverables/work packages specify the dependencies, the number of days, labor, or manhours, and the planned start date.
        • Start dates for dependent tasks are auto-filled once you specify the predecessors and the dependency relationships. You can also change the date as required.
        • The end date is auto-calculated.
        • You can also set tasks' start and end dates in the Gantt view. Just drag and drop the bar representing an item near the required date range and drag the left and right edges of the bar to particular dates as needed.
      • The duration, manhours, and start/end dates are auto-calculated for the parent-level tasks from their children.
      • You can also select an item and use the indent buttons at the top to set the hierarchy levels and define parent-child relationships for the items.
      • See Add or Edit WBS elements and task items for more details.
      Important:
In order to keep your WBS tree structure intact, the master schedule interface does not allow you to add additional task items or remove items for the tiers set up in the WBS tree. You can add only child-level tasks to those imported from the WBS tree structure imported from the WBS Setup interface.
If you want to add/remove items for the tiers defined in the WBS tree structure, you can do that only from the WBS Setup interface.

      • Click WBS on the left menu to open the WBS setup screen
      • Right-click on the tier you want to add or remove items
      • Use the options to add or remove items
      • Click on the top right to return to the master schedule interface and click refresh for the changes in the WBS tree structure reflected on the master schedule interface.
