    Add a milestone

      Article Summary

Milestones are used to indicate important achievements, completion of all tasks and work packages for a deliverable, completion of phases, and so on. Each milestone gives a measure of time required to complete the stage marked by it. Milestones break phases in a project into time segments, which aid project managers in planning, scheduling, and executing each phase.

You can add milestones to your schedule and mark important stages in each phase, completion of a phase, etc. This helps you to keep track of the progress of the stages and phases and to take necessary measures to complete them as scheduled. Tracking each milestone cumulatively contributes to the timely completion of the whole project.

The project dashboards also provide a heads-up on the upcoming milestone and the remaining days and tasks. This helps PMs to analyze the tasks' progress and take necessary measures to achieve the successive milestones as planned and complete the project on time.

To add a milestone to a schedule

      • Navigate to the schedule page of the project
      • Identify the row containing the schedule item after which you want to insert the milestone
      • Right-click on the row and choose 'Add' > 'Add Milestone'

A new blank milestone row gets added. The new row is indicated with the milestone icon:

By default, the duration is set as one day and the date is set as the end date of the last parent task.

      • Double-click inside the 'Task Name' cell and enter a label for the milestone
      • Set the task on which the milestone depends. The start date is automatically set as the next day to the end date of the predecessor task. See Add dependencies for more details.
      • Change the date for the milestone if required.

The milestone is also shown in the Gantt chart view of the project schedule.
